What does it do?
Checks the amount of textual content featured on a page.
Optionally this test can also score for pages with too much or too little content. By default, it only reports information on how much content is featured on a site's pages.
Why is it important?
Sites with too little content per-page will usually perform poorly in search engines (see SEO). For example, sites build largely from Flash (see the Flash usage test), or sites with many Under Construction pages.
Sites with too much content on individual pages may benefit from breaking their content into more digestible pages. Since this is often a contentious issue (for example, some pages may be intentionally verbose for easy printing) the test does not score for this unless specifically instructed.
Example results
How do I define content limits?
Edit the Settings for the site, and under the Configuration tab uncheck the Use default page limits? checkbox. You may enter optional maximum and minimum words per-page below.
How is it measured?
Words on each page are counted, including metadata and alternative text. A word is delimited by standard punctuation, e.g. spaces, full stops and commas. The full rule set is complex and updated regularly to handle many languages.
How to use this test effectively
If appropriate, consider defining your own content limits for this test. In most cases, this is not appropriate.
Future developments
This test is being developed for SiteRay 3.1 to display per-page results and recommendations. The test may also start to filter non-content text from word counts.
